World Clean-Up Day 2024: A Day of Action at Kenton Eco Estate

Oct 15, 2024

It’s the small, consistent efforts of many that lead to lasting change

On Friday, 20 September, Kenton Eco Estate had the honour of taking part in World Clean-Up Day, now recognised as an official International Day on the United Nations Calendar! This year’s event was truly special, as we joined millions of people worldwide in the fight against mismanaged waste. Our mission is simple but profound: to activate 5% of the world’s population and create lasting societal change in the way we manage waste and care for our environment.

The incredible students from Bushwillow School enthusiastically rolled up their sleeves to clean our beaches. Armed with our upcycled beach clean-up bags, crafted by Jo Styles from The Market Trading Store using reclaimed denim, they scoured the sands to keep our coastline pristine. Their commitment was both inspiring and a reminder that it’s the small, consistent efforts of many that lead to lasting change.

But World Clean-Up Day at Kenton Eco Estate wasn’t just about litter—it was about fostering a sense of environmental stewardship and encouraging everyone to adopt more sustainable habits. By focusing on mismanaged waste, we’re doing more than just cleaning up; we’re setting the stage for a future where less waste is produced in the first place.

We were also thrilled to conclude the day with the celebration of our baby zebra Joy’s first birthday, alongside Jo and Nolu from the Kenton Tourism Office and the students of Bushwillow School. The birthday cake and snacks, prepared by the wonderful Shirley Povey, were not only delicious but also eco-friendly. Minimal plastic was used in our celebration, with even the toothpicks replaced by raw spaghetti—small but important changes that align with our values of sustainability.

A massive thank you to everyone who came together for World Clean-Up Day! Your efforts have helped make the world—and Kenton Eco Estate—cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful. Here’s to the next generation leading the charge in catalysing societal change and ensuring a cleaner future for all!

Keep an eye out for our upcoming beach clean-up bag initiative, where you’ll be able to purchase these stylish, upcycled bags and continue making a difference.

Why It Matters:

World Clean-Up Day is an annual global social action program aimed at combating the global solid waste problem, including marine debris.

This international event, recognised by the United Nations, aims to activate 5% of the global population—enough to drive real behavioural change and tackle the issue of waste at its root.
Let’s keep this momentum going and remember: every small effort counts. Together, we can ensure a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable world.
